Alonso finally looks to be locked in. He didn’t make an out in this one and showed off a wide variety of skills with a long home run, a hit with runners in scoring position, and a two-out knock to boot. He finally pulled his OPS back over .800 despite dropping to fifth in the Mets’ order for the second time in nine games. It’s likely he moves back up to his usual fourth spot with five homers and .915 OPS over his last 15 games.

Peterson just keeps on chugging along despite consistently ugly lines. He struck out four and walked four, yet almost never ran into trouble. The A’s had a quasi-rally in the fourth inning after Peterson allowed the first two runners to reach before he set down the next three with ease. Then, Francisco Lindor made a rare error in the sixth setting up an unearned run to score, but that was all they’d get. On the season, Peterson has won seven of his eight decisions, the Mets have one nine of his 12 starts, and he has a spectacular 3.04 ERA.

Núñez will resume facing hitters after that and should begin a rehab assignment within the next 10-14 days. He’s been out since July 26 with a pronator strain.

Baty excelled initially after his demotion to Triple-A, but his last 34 games have seen him hit just .182/.315/.339 in 146 plate appearances. He’ll need to turn it around if he wants to be part of the Mets bench after rosters expand.

Winker plated Francisco Lindor in the fifth inning to cut the Athletics’ lead to 7-2 and later came around to score on a Pete Alonso RBI single that drove in two more runs. Winker has now had four straight games for the Mets and has two extra-base hits over that span.

It was a tough night for Blackburn, who had a chance to face his former team at the friendly confines of Citi Field. Blackburn allowed five baserunners in the top of the first inning and saw Seth Brown double with the bases loaded to drive in the first three runs of the night for the Athletics. Catcher Shea Langeliers would later homer off Blackburn in the third inning to drive in three more runs, as the A’s jumped all over their former teammate early in this one. Blackburn would be pulled after just four innings of work and 82 pitches thrown, giving him his worst start in a Mets uniform to date. He’ll look to right the ship in his next outing, which is scheduled for Sunday against the Marlins in what should be a plus-matchup.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters earlier on Tuesday that Marte could potentially return this weekend, which would have some pretty significant ramifications for New York’s roster. The 35-year-old veteran has been out since late June recovering from a bone bruise in his right knee.

Martinez was lifted for a pinch-hitter after being hit on the left elbow by a 100-mph fastball from Athletics starter Joe Boyle in his lone at-bat of the contest. The 36-year-old veteran is presumably day-to-day after X-rays came back negative for any fractures.

Scott is aiming to make a late-season return to New York’s pitching mix after landing on the injured list back in late July with a right elbow UCL sprain. The 25-year-old top pitching prospect will continue ramping up his throwing program and it’s not out of the question that he could be an option for the Mets before the regular season wraps up.

Rosario provided some fireworks for the Braves a couple years ago during their 2021 World Series. run, but was unable to provide much of a spark this time around before being cut loose earlier this month. The odds of him making an impact for the Mets is pretty slim, but he provides some solid veteran insurance in case of emergency.
