Louie Varland dropped to 0-5 after allowing three runs in six innings Wednesday against the Royals.

Varland struck out three and walked one in the quality start. He’ll probably head back to Triple-A now, unless maybe the Twins want to stick with six starters for a spell.

MIN Relief Pitcher #59

Jhoan Durán gave up a run in an inning while working the seventh Wednesday against the Royals.

Durán has received very little work lately, so the Twins used him down two in the seventh today, and it didn’t quite go as hoped. It’s the first time this year that he’s entered a game prior to the eighth. We wouldn’t suggest reading anything into it.

MIN Center Fielder #25

Byron Buxton remains unavailable Wednesday and might land on the injured list because of his sore hip.

Buxton’s MRI came back negative, so this doesn’t seem like a major problem. Still, the Twins don’t want to play a man down for too long. Austin Martin is starting in center field today. Manuel Margot played there yesterday, but he’s in right field today.

Twins recalled RHP Louie Varland from Triple-A St. Paul.

Varland will get the start against the Royals today, though with Zebby Matthews up, it doesn’t appear very likely that he’ll remain in the rotation afterwards. He’s 0-4 with a 6.46 ERA in six starts and one relief appearance in the majors this season.

Twins optioned RHP Josh Winder to Triple-A St. Paul.

Winder threw seven scoreless innings with an 8/1 K/BB over three appearances the last seven days, but that wasn’t enough to keep him around. He’ll be back next time a long man is needed.

Jose Miranda went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, and two RBI in Tuesday’s win over the Royals.

Miranda drove in two of the Twins’ first four runs of the night. After driving in Matt Wallner in the first inning, Miranda would later plate Wallner again in the third inning when he doubled to put the Twins up 4-1. Miranda carried a three-game hitless streak entering the night, making this performance a much-needed bounce-back for the third baseman.

Max Kepler went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI in Tuesday’s win over the Royals.

It was a big night at the plate for Kepler, who managed multiple hits and four RBI. Kepler singled to drive in Matt Wallner in the fifth inning and later hit a three-run homer off Royals reliever Chris Stratton to push the Twins’ lead to 11-3. It was just the second homer of the month for Kepler, who now has seven on the season, but the veteran right fielder now has six hits in his last three games during this mini-hot streak.

Zebby Matthews allowed two earned runs over five innings while striking out five in Tuesday’s win over the Royals.

Matthews made it through the first inning of his pro debut unscathed but ceded a solo homer to Royals outfielder MJ Melendez with one out in the second inning. The rookie right-hander would allow one more earned run in this one but was solid overall. Matthews didn’t walk a batter, showed good command of the strike zone, and pitched out of some jams with runners in scoring position to end three of the five innings he pitched. Assuming he draws another start, Matthews would be scheduled to toe the rubber on Sunday against the Rangers.

The Athletic’s Dan Hayes reports that an MRI on Byron Buxton’s right hip didn’t reveal any structural damage.

Hayes adds that Buxton is day-to-day with right hip discomfort. The 30-year-old center fielder is out of the lineup for Tuesday’s contest against the Royals following an early exit from Monday’s game, but it doesn’t sound like he’s facing an extended absence.

Byron Buxton (hip) is absent from the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Royals.

No real surprise here after Buxton made an early exit from Monday’s victory over Kansas City with right hip discomfort. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters Buxton remains day-to-day after undergoing an MRI on Tuesday to determine the severity of the issue. The club is still waiting for the results and will re-evaluate him over the next few days to determine his next steps. There should be some clarity on his status at some point later this week, but it wouldn’t be shocking if he wound up requiring another trip to the injured list.
