  • FA Wide Receiver #84
Davis retired just before the start of the 2023 season but has since decided to attempt a comeback. The Jets released him early in the offseason, allowing him to sign with any team willing to take a shot on him. The Bills are shockingly thin at wide receiver heading into the season, creating a need for extra depth at the position. Davis won’t be a fantasy-relevant option in Buffalo, but he could provide the team with a veteran presence as they attempt to figure out their rotation.
  • BUF Wide Receiver #14
It technically ends Claypool’s season, at least until he is released with an injury settlement. He could re-sign with the Bills. What started as a promising summer for the journeyman wideout ends with a trip to injured reserve. Bills head coach Sean McDermott said in May that he had been “very impressed” with Claypool’s play at OTAs. He could catch on with another receiver-needy team once he parts ways with the Bills later this month.
  • BUF Wide Receiver #13
The veteran journeyman special teams ace last appeared in a regular season game in 2022 as a member of the Falcons. Byrd bounced around the league for four seasons between 2019 and 2022 after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Panthers. The Falcons, Panthers, and Texans all gave him a shot during the 2023 season but he failed to stick with any of the three franchises. It remains to be seen if Byrd will earn a shot at return duties with the Bills.
  • BUF Quarterback #11
DiNucci spent last season on the Broncos practice squad and hasn’t played a regular-season snap since 2020. The veteran backup joins a Bills team that lost Shane Buechele to a neck injury in their first preseason game and will likely see some snaps in the team’s upcoming preseason game against the Steelers.
  • BUF Running Back #4
Cook fumbled thrice on Wednesday as defenders slapped and jabbed at the football near the end of runs, according to Buscaglia, adding Cook remains Buffalo’s lead back headed into the season. “Should it carry into the regular season, these moments from camp could stay in the back of the coaches’ heads and eventually impact playing time,” he said. “But we’re far away from that happening.” Cook in 2023 had four fumbles on 237 carries. Continued struggles with ball security could give rookie Ray Davis a chance for more playing time and early-down work.
  • BUF Quarterback #17
Josh Allen is expected to be amongst the starters who will play in Saturday’s game. McDermott said the starters are expected to play close to a full quarter, which will give us plenty to see out of the gate. How the Bills utilize their receivers in this first outing will be something to monitor as rookie Keon Coleman looks to mix in with veterans Khalil Shakir and Curtis Samuel.
  • BUF Wide Receiver #14
The veteran journeyman has missed about a week of training camp with the toe injury. The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia told Patrick Daugherty and Denny Carter on Tuesday’s Rotoworld Football Show that Claypool’s absence has been a blow to his chances of making the final roster. Claypool had drawn praise from Buffalo coaches, including head coach Sean McDermott, before the toe issue. Unless he can return to practice in short order, Claypool probably won’t make the Bills Week 1 roster.
  • BUF Tight End #88
Knox’s return-to-play date is unknown but the “vet rest” labeling indicates the injury is not serious. McDermott also called WR Chase Claypool (toe) and RB Ty Johnson (hamstring) day-to-day. Both players have been sidelined since at least July 30th. Claypool is fighting to join the Bills’ evolving wide receiver rotation while Johnson attempts to fend off fourth-round rookie RB Ray Davis. Johnson’s injury could prove costly in this regard.
  • BUF Safety
The Bills selected Bishop in the second round of this year’s draft. Bishop is competing for a starting job in camp after the Bills lost safety Jordan Poyer to the Dolphins and opted not to re-up with veteran Micah Hyde. We don’t know the exact details of Bishop’s injury at this time, but an extended absence could delay him seeing the field as a starter early in the season. We’ll see how quickly he progresses in his recovery, but he’s expected to miss at least a week or two with his injury.
  • BUF Wide Receiver #10
Shakir, entering his third NFL season, finally has a chance to function as an every-down player in Josh Allen’s offense, and has made the most of his training camp opportunities. Shakir’s big plays during camp, Buscaglia said, is “a reminder of how important he is to the scope of the Bills offense in 2024.” Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady said last week that Shakir is “as consistent as they come.” So far, it looks like Shakir, Curtis Samuel, and Keon Coleman are the favorites to run in three-receiver sets for Buffalo this season.
