  • ATL Linebacker #9
Just days after it was reported Judon had multiple teams inquiring about him, Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz reports the Patriots are finalizing a trade to send him to the Falcons. He is entering the final year of his deal, set to make a base salary of $6.5 million. Judon was a brief hold-in to Patriots camp and now gets dealt. The Falcons presumably would be willing to give Judon a larger contract than the Patriots were and get the four-time Pro Bowler to bulk up their pass rush. ESPN’s Adam Schefter adds the Falcons are sending a third-round pick to the Patriots in return. While the Falcons do not yet have a new contract in place with Judon, he has been practicing with the Patriots and this is unlikely to turn into a situation like Haason Reddick’s with the Jets. Judon will be 32 at the start of the season, performing at a high level in New England with 32 sacks in 38 games. He previously spent five productive seasons with the Ravens. The Falcons now add Judon to wreak havoc as the most experienced edge rusher on the team.
  • The second-year safety suffered the injury in the team’s preseason game against the Dolphins and was carted off the field. After being selected in the seventh round of last year’s draft, Hellams emerged to appear in 15 games while making four starts. He totaled 40 tackles and one TFL and is expected to play a meaningful role as added depth in the secondary this season.
  • ATL Linebacker
The Falcons selected Trice in the third round of this year’s draft. The former Washington Husky had been performing well in camp and was seeing work with the first-team offense, and may have earned a spot on the starting defense after a few more strong weeks of camp. Instead, Trice, who totaled 18 sacks and 28.5 TFLs in three seasons with the Huskies, will now spend his rookie campaign rehabbing in hopes of coming back healthy next offseason. The Falcons will likely address the loss of Trice in the coming days, and could look to bring in another outside linebacker to fill the void now left by the rookie.
  • ATL Running Back #28
Washington has quietly been competing for the Falcons’ No. 3 RB role with 2024 rookie Jase McClellan, who rushed 9 times for 37 yards and caught 2-of-4 targets for 13 yards. Washington tallied 12 first-team snaps to McClellan’s 10 and forced five missed tackles to McClellan’s one, maintaining an edge over the former Alabama player.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
Penix underwhelmed from an efficiency standpoint, averaging 6.5 yards per passing attempt and completing just 56.3% of passes. He showcased his arm talent on an explosive pass-play connection with WR Chris Blair along the sideline though. The game’s biggest takeaway comes via PFF’s Nathan Jahnke, who notes the Falcons used three-wide receiver sets on 23-of-24 first-team snaps, affirming OC Zac Robinson’s implementation of his mentor Sean McVay’s three-wide system.
  • ATL Safety #23
Hellams was carted from the field with an air cast applied to his left leg. Although he recently lost out to Richie Grant in the competition for the Falcons’ No. 2 safety role, Hellams remained a capable rotational defender. He played 249 coverage snaps last season without giving up an explosive pass play (15-plus yards) when in primary coverage.
  • ATL Quarterback #9
The team has yet to actually announce a starter for today’s game but with Penix officially sitting in the depth chart‘s No. 2 QB spot, it is safe to assume viewers will get their first look at Penix as a pro. Penix’s expected snap count is unknown at this time but it stands to reason the front office will aim to justify its selection of a backup quarterback with the eighth overall pick in this year’s draft. An extended showing is possible.
  • ATL Wide Receiver #14
Moore was carted off the field on Wednesday sporting an air cast. What appeared to be a bad injury was confirmed on Thursday when the team announced Moore would be out for the season. We don’t know the specifics of the injury, but we will likely know more about that in the coming days. Moore was acquired by the Falcons earlier this offseason in a trade that sent Desmond Ridder to the Cardinals. Moore caught 40 passes for 352 yards and one touchdown last season but was spotted on multiple occasions working with the backups in training camp.
  • ATL Wide Receiver #14
Moore was seen wearing an inflatable cast on his injured leg. It would appear Moore will miss an extended period, if not the entire 2024 season after being traded from the Cardinals to the Falcons in the offseason. Ray-Ray McCloud was already running ahead of Moore as Atlanta’s top slot receiver option. McCloud could see a full complement of routes alongside Drake London and Darnell Mooney if Moore is done for the year.
  • ATL Wide Receiver #34
McCloud has easily outperformed Rondale Moore, who was acquired in an offseason trade involving QB Desmond Ridder. While Moore has made some plays with Michael Penix in the Falcons’ second-team offense during camp, it’s the veteran McCloud who has functioned as the first-team option through the spring and summer. “I have the ultimate confidence in him,” Atlanta wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard said of McCloud. “I think he’s going to be really good for our football team.” McCloud worked primarily as a kicker returner in San Francisco before signing with the Falcons this offseason. His best receiving season came in 2021 with the Steelers, when he had 39 receptions for 277 scoreless yards. McCloud could benefit from what is expected to be a pass-heavy Atlanta offense, though he would be the team’s fourth or fifth pass-catching option barring wideout injuries.
